POZZO DELLA CAVA This well, probably of Etruscan origin, was enlarged by Clement VII, then closed in 1646. A perfect cylindrical hole of which all memory was lost despite a commemorative plaque, until the estructuring of a rnedieval house brought it back to light.

POTTERY WORKSHOP Fragments of bowls and dishes were uncovered by the hundreds in the pottery workshop in Via della Cava, active between the late 14th and mid-16th century.

THE MILL The millstone of an unde ground mill, five rninutes from the Cathedral.

THOUSAND CELLARS More than a thousand cellars, going way back in time, on several levels, form a dense network beneath the houses of Orvieto.

CRAFTS While art tells its story in the museums of Orvieto, it also does so in the hundred artisan shops along the narrow streets. It will be fun to discover the workshops of bizarre woodworkers who create fairly-tale figures or just go window-shopping along the way, until you finally decide what to buy.

LACE Traditional Orvieto lace, known as "Irlanda", is still to be found in fine table linens and doilies. The decorative rnotifs find inspiration in the bas-reliefs on the facade of the Cathedral.

POTTERY With one eye on their Etruscan ancestors and the other on their medieval forebears, the potters of Orvieto experiment with new techniques and colors.

OLD, SILVER AND PLATINUM An Etruscan soul peers out in the fantasy and combinations of forms used by the most recent generation of goldsmiths in their search for new styles.

LEATHER Hand-made bags, belts, shoes. The patrician coat of arms has been replaced by the artisan's brand.

WOOD In many a small workshop where wood has been crafted for generations, tools thought obsolete are still in use. To be found here and there throughout the city, with displays of old and new fantasies in wood.

ROUGHT IRON This rnedieval tradition still continues in the historical center and the surroundings in common utensils or more highly prized objects made to order.
